THE BASICS
- Japanese High School covers grades 10 through 12. First-year students will be around 15 or 16 years old, second-year students will be around 16 or 17 years old, and third-year students will be around 17 or 18 years old.
- The school year begins in April, and ends at the end of March. School runs year-long, with only a few small breaks, instead of one long summer vacation. There is a two-week-long summer break in July, with classes resuming in August, and there is a two-week-long winter break that lasts from the 23rd of December until around the 7th of January.
- To get into High School, you have to take a very difficult entrance exam that most students study in advance for, sometimes for several months, sometimes a year or more.
- You have to pay tuition to attend High School. Chuo Gakuen's tuition is relatively reasonable, considering that it's a public school in a well-to-do neighborhood.
- Chuo is a smallish school, and only has three classes for each year, with roughly 30 students in each class.
- Classes begin at 8:30. When you go home depends on how long it takes to clean the school, whether or not you're in any clubs, which clubs those are, and whether or not you're in the student council or any other class committees. There are no classes on Saturday or Sunday.
- Students in each year are required to take these courses – Math, History/Social Studies, Japanese, Science, English, and Physical Education. Electives are few, but you can choose to take Home Economics, Art, or Music on days when you aren't in P.E.
- Students stay in their homeroom for each class, and the teachers travel from room to room. The only classes you would leave your homeroom for would be Physical Education, other electives, and if the Science lesson that day requires the use of a lab. Each class has a homeroom teacher who takes roll at the beginning of each day, and is generally responsible for that class's behavior. So if Kanzaki-sensei is having a problem with Teaki, Chikara gets to hear about it. Won't that just please her to no end? XD
- At the end of each day, the students clean the school. Once the school has been cleaned, everyone disperses for clubs and other such after-school activities.
- Clubs are a very important part of school, and every student is encouraged to join a club. Please note that this does not mean your character has to be in a club. Since you spend all day in classes with the same people, clubs allow you to socialize with students from other classes and, most importantly, helps foster relationships between the Sempai (upperclassmen) and Kohai (underclassmen). There are two types of clubs – sports clubs, and culture clubs. I'm not going to bother telling you the difference between them. XD
- About the Sempai/Kohai relationship – YOU ALWAYS OBEY YOUR SEMPAI. ALWAYS. The only exception would be if your sempai was Kuno Tatewaki, but since he does not attend Chuo, this is a moot point. (at least Meej will be amused by that last part! <3) Kohai are basically expected to be slaves for their sempai, depending on how tyrannical said sempai is. In return for this servitude, later in life your sempai might do something nice like write you a letter of recommendation or hook you up with job interviews.
- Once a year, the school holds a student-run Culture Festival, which is kind of like an Open House on crack. Each class does a special project like run a Coffee House in their classroom, or turn their homeroom into a haunted house. It isn't officially a competition, but everyone treats it like it is, so most classes try to do different, very creative things. Unless it is filled with lazy people, each club (even the sports clubs) does a project, also. Teachers can make suggestions and help out if they choose to, but the festival is run ONLY by the students. Classes stop several days before the festival to get everything set up, and most of the students will be practically living in the school in that time. The point of the Culture Festival is to raise money and show everyone how WAY AWESOME the school is. The festival is attended by parents, friends, and average joes on the street.
- The school also holds a Sports Festival once a year. Each class competes in various sporting events, and at the end of the day the winners are announced. This isn't as big a deal as the Culture Festival, but the students still take it pretty seriously, and everyone has to compete. Kia would like to apologize in advance to all of the other students in class 1-B. XD
- Every year, usually in the fall, each class takes a school trip. They spend a few days in some town that is not particularly exciting, but far enough away from Tokyo to be at least mildly interesting. Each year (meaning all of the first-years and their teachers, etc.) travels together to a different place. So the third-years might take a school trip to Nagoya in October, and the first-years might take a school trip to Sapporo in September, etc. etc....
- Everyone in the school has lunch at the same time, and students are allowed to eat lunch anywhere on campus, though most kids just eat in their classrooms.
- Because you spend all day every day with the same people, you're eventually going to know who your fellow classmates are. Keep this in mind when you set stories.

NOTE: This is by no means the definitive list of all the clubs in Chuo. These are just a few of the standard clubs that most Japanese schools have. So if you think to yourself, "Oh man it would be so cool if my character could be in the Volleyball Club, but alas THERE IS NO VOLLEYBALL CLUB," WORRY NOT, because there could absolutely be a volleyball club. There is ALMOST no limit to the clubs that might be at Chuo.
