20 Facts About Ishino Chikara

Name: Ishino Chikara: strength of will. The family name, made of the kanji "ishi" and "no" (石の), can be read as "of stone," or "of earth," or "of self-will." Her given name, since it is a female's proper noun, is normally written with hiragana "chi-ka-ra" (ちから). In college, as her form of teen rebellion, she started writing it with the kanji 力, which is read as strength, power, and the force of one's soul.

Position: Sailor Galaxia, the Princess of Strength

Appearance: Chikara is small, five feet and bare change, and built lean and whippy. She's all leg. Her hair is short and fine and flippy, curling up above her shoulders, and is shiny strawberry-blonde. Her eyes are deep mahogany, dark brown with reddish flecks. She likes short skirts, because she is always in motion and long skirts trip her up; she wears jeans because they don't wrinkle (she hates ironing). She is FAST, all blazing light and speed based on years upon years of training as kendouka, and even though she's tiny she has enough presence to seem a million feet tall if she needs to.

She is App 2 but Cha 5. Whenever she is passionate about something -- when she's lecturing on something she loves, when she is sparring or performing kata, when she is explaining her thesis on the parallels between the fall of the Romanovs and Heian Japan -- she is indescribably, inexplicably lovely, lit up inside with that inner glow that makes her students WANT to listen to her. Her presence is very powerful, and she burns so brightly and fiercely. She never sees it, and has never considered herself attractive; Kenrou sees her this way all the time. Her aura is shining, gleaming sapphire-blue, shot through with streaks of gold.

Age/Birthday/Whatnot: April 20th, 24. Chikara is a Taurus with Libra rising and a Capricorn moon, which means that she's incredibly charismatic as long as you agree with her that duty comes before life.

Mundane Life

Friends and Family: Ishino Madoka-sensei is a professor of botany and horticulture at Toudai; Ishino Jakuriin-sensei is an anthropologist and professor of Central African civilizations at Meiji University. They are both small, focused, and absent-minded when it comes to concentrating on things that are not their specific areas of expertise -- like, say, their daughter. She loves them very much. They drive her completely insane. Tsurian is her best (only) friend; Kenrou is her spouse. She will have two children: daughter Tsukyou (徹胸 [つきょう], piercing heart), born October 2003, and son Daichi (第一, first/important son), born April 2005.

Usual Daily Routine: Wake up; eat breakfast while reading the paper; force Kenrou to eat breakfast; write notes on the train; teach; hover over Kendo Club, if required; perform requisite duties as ranking student at Kogarashi dojo; eat dinner; watch news while doing chores; perform meditative kata; sleep; repeat.

Background: Chikara has never, ever been average. Her parents are scientists, both well-respected in their fields, and distracted to the point where Chikara essentially raised herself, genetically gifted with their above-average intelligence and preternatural ability to focus on any one thing to the exclusion of all else. She learned to read early, surrounded as she was by books in her childhood and early life; she devoured everything in the house that was in written fashion, down to the encyclopedias. She argued philosophy and history with her father and loomed quietly around her mother's painstaking experiments with greenery.

They moved from Kyoto to Tokyo for Madoka-sensei's career at Toudai, and the change in environment from rambly, quaintly historical runs-around to the pent-up narrowness of the capital city nearly drove the girl insane; not only was she a bright child, but an active one. So, in order to channel her restlessness, her parents introduced her to Kogarashi-sensei, an old family friend, and enrolled her in kendo, since their delicate-seeming daughter didn't seem quite suited for hand-to-hand fighting. She took to it immediately, and it soon became one of the major centers of her life. She's studied it ever since, attacking kendo, and the iaido art specifically, with the same single-minded focus she uses on her studies and even her day-to-day life.

Once armed with a History degree and a teaching certificate from Toudai, she began teaching at Chuo Gakuin, and has been there since graduation.

A Little More Specific

Quirks: With very, very rare exceptions she presents herself as an unfeeling, anti-emotional automaton of Duty. There are things she has to do, and she will do them, and she will do them RIGHT. Nothing else matters. Part of this application as Force Of Duty -- and also her fear of failure -- means that she's incapable of articulating abstract concepts in words, because the words are by their nature imprecise.

She is very traditionally Japanese, except in all the places where she's not because she Knows She Can Do It Better (see: single-handedly attempting to overthrow the educational system). She is devoutly Buddhist, very superstitious, and very conscious of her place in society (which is as its ruler through beneficent force and judicious application of striking terror into the hearts of her enemies).

By nature a collector, a packrat, and a cluttered soul, the most profound of her collections is her vast, terrifying array of Precious Moments figures, all neatly arranged and cataloged to shocking precision on a series of curio shelves. The unkind would say that she uses these as her handbook for How To Be Human And Possibly Also Emotional; the kind merely look the other way. She loves old Hollywood movies and Golden Era jazz for the same reason: the emotional resonances of Ella Fitzgerald or "Gone With the Wind" are straightforward enough for her to understand.

She speaks Latin and English, and watches BBC World News. Watching the news or reading something that fascinates her are the only ways she will consent to sit still. She is always in motion, otherwise -- she will take the stairs before the elevator, unless it's more than ten floors up (in which case, the elevator would be quicker).

To her, there is no difference between Chikara and Galaxia -- she is Galaxia, because that is her Duty.

Darkest Secret: She is afraid of Failure, in the way that it's a crippling, life-changing terror created by not only her own personality but a soul that once belonged to someone else, and watched that someone else, through Utmost Arrogance, betray and then systematically slaughter THE ENTIRE GALAXY. It gives her nightmares sometimes, and she worries constantly about when her willpower will give out. Her heart is Serenity's façade.

Reactions to Sudden Hugs: If you are brave enough -- or stupid enough -- to shatter Chikara's territorial bubble, then either you are one of the few people from whom she would allow such impositions or you will die.

Virtues and Vices: As aforementioned, her powers of acquisition are fierce. Do not ever touch the curios: do not move them, do not lift them, do not artfully rearrange them. She will kill you. Willful ignorance fills her with incoherent rage; this is the only thing liable to make her lose her temper. Luckily for all parties concerned, losing her temper is very, very rare. She is burningly, fiercely, stridently, and even more adverbly Good. She is not always Right, though she certainly thinks she is, and she very much tries to be; unfortunately she is rarely, if ever, Nice. She is unswervingly loyal to the Princess of Hope, to the point where she would do absolutely anything a part-gaijin fourteen year-old girl tells her to do. She is impeccably honest.

Badassery

Power Sphere: Strength. This is not necessarily physical force, just like Kakyuu's Wisdom isn't just Knowing Things. It also encompasses Power and Willfulness.

Asswhoopery: Chikara is an extremely skilled kendoka of the fourth dan -- Galaxia, however, is indefatigable with a blade in her hands. She is quick, lithe, and carries a talismanic relic in the form of her Soul Sword -- in pure sword combat, she is very difficult to best. Without henshin, Chikara is an iadoka, a student of a specific kendo art form that uses sheathing and unsheathing a katana as single motions; transformed, the Galactic sword is a western-style longsword with a simple wooden cross-guard and a sapphire pommel stone, and thus the techniques she uses as kendoka are not applicable. She is charismatic and shining, a figure of awful power (as in the awe-inspiring sense). She has a singular teleport that differs from the Guardians in that it is more long-distance based than short-distance travel; she can't concentrate on near landmarks enough to make short starts and stops. Her Royal Onegai is a shockwave of killing force, able to smite her enemies in a radius of several square miles, like a selective nuclear blast.

Greatest Weakness: She often -- almost always -- acts before thinking, in her overwhelming desire to Do Good. She is impatient, untrusting, and in a terrible hurry to kick ass and take names, and luck and tenacity are the only things that can keep it from biting her on the ass.

Attacks: (subject to edity change asap)
Golden Shadow Blast: The Blast is your typical energy attack, fired barehanded hadouken style, with one nice twist: the Galactic Warrior being who and what she is, she is familiar with two different environments -- the burning light and fire of innumerable suns and the endless cold vacuum of space. Thusly, instead of a merely blinding or singeing attack, the Blast causes freezing burns of excessive cold and excessive heat. Such an attack is capable of shattering metal (freezing followed by burning). It can be shielded against and redirected (mirrors can work wonders) but can't be blocked due to the precise and accurate nature of a laserlike blast. This is Galaxia's basic attack, and one she can perform multiple times without tiring. It's not strong enough to completely incapacitate non-wussy enemy, but it will leave a mark.

Wave Arc: The energy wave is more simple plain-burnies than the Blast and does considerably less damage, but instead of pinpointing one target, it sweeps out from the arc of Galaxia's horizontal or vertical swordstroke in a straight line and will radiate out to line-of-sight. This means that it's VERY likely for Innocent Bystanders to get in the way of this thing. Oops. It can be dodged or blocked, but has too much momentum to be redirected.

Fuku: White bodice, pale yellow sailor collar with a single white ribbon. Pale yellow chest bow, center symbol a horizontal-and-vertically equal cross-shaped brooch with the center shaped like a spiral galaxy with just a bit of the Seizuishou showing. Her gloves are the same as the traditional Lunar fuku, white elbow-length with ribbed pale yellow tops. Choker, boots, and epaulets are all lifted whole-cloth from Chaos Galaxia's fuku; pleated metal skirt is the bastard child of Chaos Galaxia's and that of your traditional canon fuku and is bordered at the waist with a linked copper belt that matches the choker. Back bow is also pale yellow, and has longer-than-knee-length streamers.

Connections

The Galactics

Galaxia's court has a very difficult job: persuading their princess that accepting their assistance does not in any way imply her inability to kick ass and take names.

Kansou Rin
Rin is a Captain's Captain. She is more vocally vehement about The Rules than even Chikara, and even though she's a little too loud at times ("...Really, Rin.") Chikara respects her enormously because she is stuck in the unenviable position of Having To Tell Galaxia-hime To Stop Doing Everything Herself. She's really rather like Robin to Chikara's Batman, only NOT SO RETARDED.

Utakou Arumi
The difference between Arumi and Random Retarded Bystander (and the line that keeps her in her Princess's good graces) is that Arumi tries really, really hard, and when it comes down to it she can Get Shit Done. It is pretty obvious that she means well, and a little bit of frustration when Arumi shows up at The Galactic Lair (identity tbd) with her shirt on backwards will be tempered by the fact that god damn it all, SHE'S REALLY REALLY CUTE.

Tetsuya Bijiko
Were Galaxia inclined to micromanage her faction -- or indeed, to manage it at all -- Bijiko would leave her at a complete loss. Her use of tradition only when deemed necessary is anathema to Chikara's general worldview, and thus all parties concerned are lucky that dealing with her is Rin's job.

Nagarekawa Sakura
On the one hand, Chikara is a very staid woman who believes most firmly in doing things just once, and doing them right -- and Sakura is not ... exactly ... about that. At all. In any way. On the other hand, Sakura's behavior is neither Chikara's problem nor her business: she's Rin's. As long as her job gets done, she really won't do anything but look perhaps minorly disapproving when Sakura comes home with her new tattoos.

The Lunars

As far as Galaxia is concerned, the only job of a Lunar Soldier is protecting the Princess. Doing anything else is wasting time, TIME IN WHICH THE PRINCESS MAY BE GETTING HURT.

Kakureru Kyouri
It is impossible, even for a woman of Chikara's stone-faced nature, to not love Kia. Chikara, in fact, reveres Serenity with a devotion borne of OWING HER SOUL, which is sort of spooky for her own senshi to witness. She will obey Serenity's EVERY COMMAND. Seriously. Every single one. Kia could invite her to a pajama party and ask to play with her hair or do her makeup, and she will do it. She'll even sit still.

Ashikaseno Anrui
As long as the Princess is safe, then Ashikaseno-san is doing her job, no matter how unconventional her leadership may appear to be. However, the second anything happens to Kyouri-hime, ANYTHING AT ALL, Ashikaseno-san had better start talking really, really fast.

Mokushi Oki
Grudging respect. Though Chikara is not above pulling Mokushi-kun aside for some quick attitude adjustments re: Kenrou's bank account.

Naien Atarimae
Chikara is as outwardly as painfully traditional and proper as they come, and so Atarimae-sama's direct connection with the otherworld is an instant line to immense and complete respect.

Shizenkai Misao
Chikara is passably familiar with Shizenkai-kouhai, who had just begun her tenure with Toudai's Faculty of Education as Chikara was receiving her graduation certificate.

Futekino Kyouko
Galaxia is not responsible for Futekino-kun, and thus her ... eccentricities ... are none of her concern. Thank all the gods and spirits.

Seno Atsumi
Seno-san seems to have an interest in many things that require being absolutely still.

Shoumetsu Yuriko
Shoumetsu-san is quiet and well-behaved. She always has her homework ready, she is always paying attention in lecture EVEN WHEN SHE ISN'T, and she is as fiercely loyal to Kyouri-hime as anyone could ever ask. Also, Saturn is REALLY BADASS.

Sokei Ninmae
Sokei-san is an invaluable asset to the Chuo Gakuen administration, and Ishino-sensei is pleased and grateful for the strides continually made in the vein of educational reform.

The Kinmoku

Galaxia sees the Kinmoku as a tight-run ship of military specialists, completely oblivious to the fact that if Kakyuu were to hear this, she would laugh and laugh and laugh.

Mitsu Hanako
Much like it would be impossible for Chikara not to love Kia, it is equally impossible for her not to respect Hanako, despite her youth. Their shared love of history means that Hanako would be able to see Chikara at her most passionate, and also Chikara would be inclined to look the other way were Hanako to pull anything really retarded.

Hideaki Katsuko
Katsuko is a Good Solid Traditional Japanese Man... in a skirt. She pays attention, she supports her teammates: to Chikara, she is Good People.

Celeste deVoie
It is certainly not deVoie-san's fault that she had the misfortune to be born non-Japanese, thought it is to her credit that she seems to overcome this terrible hardship admirably.

The Terrans

Like all good Japanese, Galaxia respects the role the Earth's faction serves as their hosts -- but don't expect any favors.

Takawa Daichi
A secret: Chikara is actually reasonably fond of Daichi. Unfortunately, having Chikara's fondness is a very scary thing -- this means that she will always and forever be really, REALLY hard on him. Daichi is not allowed to make mistakes when Chikara is watching. Period. Poor Daichi.

Amakusa Kenrou
Any comments on Ishino-sensei's ability to be reached at a certain apartment in Hibiya will be discarded as sheer coincidence.

Susuki Binshou
Not even Chikara can stand against the sheer volume of cute in the Wee Tiny Voice. It will confound her a bit that a sharp look from her is liable to make poor Binshou wet himself, though.

Giou Toshiro
Complete loss. Chikara is just too straightforward; Toshiro's masks and layers just throw her for a loop. She KNOWS he is layering and evading; she's a schoolteacher, she can tell these things -- but she has no idea WHY. And Chikara HATES not knowing why.

Shunran Teaki
Extra homework, standing outside in the hall, cleaning erasers, mopping the floor, and any further comments on Sensei's personal life WILL SEE YOU LEAVING THIS ROOM IN A VERY SMALL BAGGIE, SHUNRAN-KUN, DO YOU UNDERSTAND.
