[edit] The Basics
Name : Tsukuru (作) means "to create" and Mariko (真理子) is "true reason child." Direct and to the point, just like Mariko.
Position : By daytime, Mari is a second-year Chou Gakuen student, video game fanatic, aspiring video game designer or animator, and President of the Chou Gakuen gaming club.
Appearance : See the doll: Mariko elouai doll.
Hair – Mariko has her father’s dark brown hair and it extends down to her chest that she keeps very plain and doesn’t style or do anything with it beyond putting it in a ponytail when it’s hot. The ends of her hair are cut in a razor type rather haphazardly, giving the locks jagged ends with different lengths. She has thick bangs that are parted down the middle and swept off to either side behind her ears because she doesn’t feel like trimming them that often. Her hair is very thick and curls inward slightly at the ends. For one week though, she had streaks of pale orchid in her hair before her parents made her take it out. She wants to dye it again though, it’s fun!
Eyes – A pale blue-grey in color, Mariko’s eyes are usually involved in her computer, a book, or are hazed over with her daydreaming. They’re oval-shaped with thick lashes and framed by thick, dark eyebrows because tweezing HURTS. Mariko can also not keep a secret with her eyes. They instantly give her away as to how she’s feeling at the time, lighting up, narrowing, or crinkling with laughter. Also, when she feels someone is being obtuse/narrow-minded/etc., her eyebrow raises and she looks as though she pities them.
Face – Mariko’s face is heart-shaped with angular cheeks and a slightly pointed chin. She has a pale peaches and cream complexion that tends to bruise extremely easily. Sometimes Mariko has bruises and she doesn’t know where they even come from. Her nose is straight with a bump over the top of the bridge from smacking into something as a kid (she doesn’t remember what it was), and her lips are pale in color and somewhat thin. Mari never bothers with makeup and prefers to go au natural cause she’s just gonna wind up rubbing it off anyway. Both of her ears are pierced only once and usually have some sort of weird earrings dangling from them. Sometimes Mari may only wear one earring in either ear.
Height – 5’5”
Weight – 135
Build – Slender, but not willowy, Mariko is rather proud of her frame. She wishes her bust could be a bit bigger though (it’s only about a 36 A). With long arms and legs, she looks rather coltish, as though she never really caught up with her growth as a child. Mariko’s hands are slender and very deft from handling pens, pencils, and the like all her life and she has excellent hand-eye coordination. Because of her tendency to go out walking (and occasionally dancing) in the street, Mariko’s body is in shape, but it’s nothing spectacular.
Voice – A bright, sometimes laughing mezzo-soprano, Mariko’s voice is what most expresses her moods. Her voice rises and falls as she speaks, sounding almost musical when she does. When it comes to actual singing though, Mariko won’t even go there. She can’t carry a tune in a bucket. On the times that she’s being serious or thoughtful, her voice slows, as though she’s thinking about every word before she says it.
Clothing – Exuberant, bright, anything to show off her personality. This girl shops at thrift stores, name brand stores, everything in between and it shows. Mix-and-match is the name of the game here. She could wear a chic black blouse she got at the local mall paired with a brightly-colored gypsy skirt that swirls around her feet. Mariko favors bright colors and loose, flowing fabrics. For footwear, anything from Roman sandals to stilettos will do for her. Everyday is an adventure and she dresses to meet that adventure. She’ll wear bangles and beads, headscarves or hats, sunglasses or colored wire-rims just for the heck of it. One minute she could want to wear something casual and the next she could be seen walking around in a floor-length skirt with an elegant top, even out in public. Mariko's current obsession is Lolita and she's been saving up all of her money to buy some new pieces. But they're all SO EXPENSIVE!
Age/Birthday/Whatnot : Mariko was born on March 15th and she's a Pisces. Her Rising Sign is Aquarius and her Moon Sign is Aries.
[edit] Mundane Life
Friends and Family : Tsukuru Kohaku Father, lawyer, hopes that his son will one day become a big-shot attorney like him. Has no idea how he got such a..."unique" daughter.
Tsukuru Meikyou Housewife, quiet as a mouse, wispy little thing who's greatest joy in life is lecturing Mariko about her clothing and her lust for computer games.
Tsukuru Akira Beloved older brother whom Mariko adores with all of her little heart. He's off at college now and is studying to be an attorney although he's secretly a closet poet. Doesn't get to see Mariko too often anymore.
Tsukuru Haru Spawn of hellfire, age 10, and Mariko's biggest pain in the neck. Haru could just go jump off of a cliff as far as she's concerned.
Usual Daily Routine : Mariko wakes up at about six every morning and immediately goes into the bathroom to start her hour-long baths. By this time her younger brother should be up and about, as well as her parents, and they're going into the bathroom just as she's getting out. Then she gets ready for school, trying to dress up her uniform as much as possible, has breakfast, grabs Baka, and is off for the day.
School usually consists of school-stuff. After school every Wednesday and Friday are meetings of the Chou Gakuen Gaming Club, of which Mariko is president, thank you very much. After about an hour of that, she goes online with Baka and begins to play her games until dinner time. Dinner is done, Mariko goes back to her computer. Sometimes she spices things up by going to her Playstation until about 9 PM and then for three hours she draws. Morning repeats the same thing.
Weekends usually vary depending on what Mariko wants to do.
Background : Tsukuru Kohaku met Akajiwa Meikyou when they were in high school. After attending Tokyo University together and dating for several years, they graduated and moved to Kourakuen, living in a small 1-room apartment. That all changed though, once Tsukuru Akira was born. As the first son of the family, he was cherished and raised to follow in his father’s footsteps. His father was slowly rising in the ranks of the attorneys and had begun to make enough where they were able to afford a larger, more spacious apartment. Which was good, considering that three years later, Tsukuru Mariko came along.
A precocious and curious baby, Mariko was always into everything and anything and only seemed calmed when she would sit down with Akira and watch the older boy and his friends play video games. When she became older, she begged Akira to play with her too and since he was a normal boy and liked his video games, he agreed. Mari learned to play as well as her brother after only a few months’ effort. Everything was just fine and dandy with the family for the first six years of Mari’s life. She was the adored daughter, the beloved (but sometimes annoying) younger sister, and she was growing and being happy until…the little spawn known as Haru showed up.
A little brother was the LAST thing that Mariko wanted or needed and for the first time, she began acting out. She became even more precocious than ever, wearing odd, mismatched clothing, talking about someday she was going to dye her hair purple, and her parents were so wrapped up with their finicky, colicky newborn (and their own lives) that they didn’t have time to curb this behavior. So, with only Akira to look out for her, Mariko began to develop her own outlook on the world and for several years retreated deep into video games and her art. Akira was always there though, making time for his little sister now that she understood what he had gone through when she was born. He instilled upon her that even if things happen, the only thing you can do is go with the flow. To learn to adapt, to be creative and make the situation and the world your own. Akira was a closet poet, so he understood about dreams being left on the shelf. He understood and he didn’t want that to happen to his sister. So, he stayed by her side and the two became incredibly close.
When she turned 12 and started middle school, Mariko realized that now people were expecting her to grow up. They were expecting her to start thinking about her own future, devote herself to her studies, and become a productive member of society. But what about what she wanted? What about Mariko’s dreams? Those were the questions she asked herself as she began her middle school career and for a time she was the ideal student. She studied, she was quiet and attentive, she made sure to ace her tests, but it all felt so WRONG on so many levels. This wasn’t like her. It wasn’t like her to just sit and do what people told her to do. Growing up she was able to be creative and do what she wanted to. Akira was now in high school and although he’d grown distant, his voice was there, in her ear, reminding her that it was up to her to change her world around her. To make it her own. And so the next day? Mariko showed up with purple streaks in her ear and earrings in her ears. There were also bangles on her right ankle and wrists and a headscarf wrapped around her head. The teachers all protested, but when they saw that it didn’t take away from her academic studies, were content to leave her alone. Her parents on the other hand weren’t so understanding. Kohaku and Meikyou promptly sat their daughter down and told her, flat out, that if she didn’t remove that color from her hair, they were going to take away the Playstation. Yes, THAT Playstation that Mari got for Christmas when she was young. Of course this was horror beyond all other imaginable horrors and she immediately went and removed the dye.
Upset and now decidedly put out, Mari decided to take a turn on the street and go window shopping. Well, she wound up coming across the game called Tiberian Dawn and was so taken by it that she bought it and brought it home…where she spent the next seven hours in front of her computer. When she finally broke away, she was shocked. She’d never done that before! But computer games were now on her wish list and she soon caused the family computer to have a breakdown from all of the games she had loaded on it. Some included were: Tiberian Dawn (obviously), Age of Empires, Starcraft, and Civilization. Mariko had been spending her pocket money to stock up on games and she loved them all.
So her parents came to an executive decision. Since Mari had settled down (or so they thought) they bought her a laptop for her 14th birthday. Immediately christening it Baka, Mariko then became inseparable from the machine. She is never without her laptop on her person and sunk an almost obscene amount of money she earned from odd jobs and allowance into making sure that he DIDN’T meet the same fate as the family comp. The next two years passed normally, with Mariko becoming more and more inseparable from her computer until she began to carry it almost everywhere, her becoming president of the Chou Gakuen gaming club in her first year, and once more making her parents gripe because of her outrageous dressing. Still, it doesn’t interfere with her schoolwork, so her parents can’t complain much. But for the past couple of months, Mariko’s been feeling rather…off. Like there’s something she should be doing and isn’t doing. Something that’s missing from her life and it bothers her to no end.
[edit] A Little More Specific
Quirks : Baka is always on her person. Baka is a laptop computer that she carries with her, no matter where she goes and has a variety of cases to carry him in. Mariko is also a deep fan of computer games such as Tiberian Dawn, Age of Empires, Starcraft, and Civilization. All of them are loaded onto Baka and she spends obscene amounts of money to make sure that her computer is up to par. Also...DON'T TOUCH HER PLAYSTATION! Mari loves her Playstation like it was her first-born child, but often when she plays, she winds up pausing the game for hours while she draws the characters. It's weird like that.
Darkest Secret : This young lady is a desperate reality-dodger. She absolutely cannot stand the thought of sinking through the cracks like so many others in society and wants to someday just openly rebel by dying her hair, dressing outrageously, and refusing to conform to society's ideals. Also, she is the mangaka known as Yasu Aoi...creator of several Sailor Moon-related doujinshi that aren't exactly appropriate for children. If anyone found out about this, things would certainly hit the fan, so she keeps her work hidden, especially from her family.
Reactions to Sudden Hugs : Mariko loves em and will hug the person right back. She isn't afraid of hugs, nor of being touchy-feely with other people. In fact, she'll often greet some of her good friends with hugs.
Virtues and Vices : More to come.
[edit] Connections
[edit] The Terrans
Kunzite: Amakusa Kenrou: Amakusa-san is going to have Mariko's complete and total respect. At least until he spots her as a reality dodger. THEN she's going to have to ask Kakyuu-hime to scare him. Just a little. He's just so... so Zen that it's hard for her to argue with him. Although she will find it a little creepy that he smiles all the time, she knows that Amakusa-san is the right man for the job as Kunzite, Captain of the Terran team. After all, he is cool to the nth degree...and if anyone can deal with Shunran-kun, it's Amakusa-san.
Nephrite: Susuki Binshou: There is nothing that will stop Mariko from squeeing and hugging Binshou the minute she hears him talk in his Wee Little Voice. Binshou-kun, please get used to hugs from her, thank you very much ^^
Jadeite: Giou Toshiro: Not only does Toshiro-san wear really awesome clothes, he plays video games! Mariko will definitely enjoy Toshiro's company, especially if he teaches her how to play Pokemon...if only so she can beat him later.
Zoisite: Shunran Teaki: ...Mariko's just gonna stay faaaar away from Shunran-kun, okay? Okay.
[edit] The Kinmoku
Kakyuu: Mitsu Hanako: Kakyuu-hime first, and foremost, will get Mariko’s undivided and unquestionable loyalty. After all, she WAS chosen to be the Princess of Wisdom, so shouldn’t she be wise? Hanako and Mariko could meet at a soccer match. Mariko’s younger brother is part of the team and Mari often tags along with her laptop. She’d be great at providing new soccer strategies and insights as to how to make the team better. She would respect Hana’s insight and listen to it, but she would also be the one to try and see outside of it, to possibly provide a new angle with which the team can use to better themselves as Senshi. She views Hanako as someone who can understand why she is the way she is without judging her and for Mariko, that is an awesome thing.
Fighter: Hideaki Katsuko: Katsuko is an awesome person, really she is. Mariko admires how she can be herself without fear of being blunt or rude. She’s also so passionate about her goals and that’s something Mariko can definitely relate to. Mariko will love all of Katsuko’s plans for battle and she’ll be right there behind her making suggestions as to how to improve the strategy and do the most amount of damage without worrying about leaving Kakyuu-hime unprotected. Mari will trust Katsuko to make the right decisions and will follow her without a whole lot of question. Where Katsuko is executing the war, Mariko is the one who made the strategy to do it.
Seeker: Celeste deVoie: Celeste is a bundle of fun; Mari never knows what she’s going to do next. Also, the girl could probably be a great debate partner, which also makes Mari happy to no end. Celeste’s curiosity will have Mariko following right behind her, wondering where they’re going to be going next. Although her maverick-like tendencies will confuse Mari just a bit, she’ll just sort of shrug them off and go: “Whatever floats your boat, deVoie-san.”
[edit] The Lunars
Serenity: Kakureru Kyouri: Another person who will receive hugs from Mariko. And if Kia ever shows Mari her art, then Mariko will wanna show Kia her art. She'd also be very willing to put on a pair of overalls and throw paint at random things. The Princess of Hope is a sweet and lovable young woman and Mariko is confident that the Lunars will protect her with their very lives. ...If a little over zealously.
Venus: Ashikaseno Anrui: Ashikaseno-san is very dedicated in her role as Sailor Venus. Mariko just doesn't know what else to make of the girl. They don't really have very much in common so...yeah.
Mercury: Mokushi Oki: Uh...Mariko will be ignoring Oki except for the off-chance they meet online, both under codenames on the internet.
Mars: Naien Atarimae: Naien-san is amazing. The discipline and the strength it must have taken to go through all of that harsh training will immediately make Mariko respect her. That and the itako stare basically would scare her out of her wits. After all, then Naien-san could see that she's a reality-dodger and that's NOT GOOD.
Jupiter: Shizenkai Misao: Misao will probably have met Mariko, as she often spends hours in the nearest bookstore pouring over art books, manga, video game guides, etc. and referencing them on Baka as he sits next to her on the floor. Misao is awesome in her devotion to the Princess and Mariko respects that. Also, it's hard not to like someone who works around books.
Saturn: Shoumetsu Yuriko: Shoumetsu-san will confuse and intimidate Mariko and she'll be avoiding her for a while. The only thing they have in common is their like of drawing and while Yuriko's is sketching, Mariko does Really Complex Characters so I don't see them comparing notes.
Uranus: Futekino Kyouko: Kyouko is AWESOME and there is no doubt about that. It takes a lot to become a professional jockey and Mariko admires her so much for her grit and determination, not to mention her devotion to her duty. Kyouko's bluntness won't bother Mariko one bit, but she will twitch at not being able to voice her own opinion and Kyouko's temper will cause her to either retaliate...or walk away and hide behind someone.
Neptune: Seno Atsumi: Seno-san is a very lovely and elegant person. Mariko will be hard-pressed to find common ground with her, as she is such an artistic person and Mari's only hobby is drawing...but maybe they'll have that in common? Either way, Mari will be on her best behavior around Seno-san.
Pluto: Sokei Ninmae: Needless to say, Sokei-san is someone that Mariko will look up to and respect, especially considering she's the Senshi of Time. About the only thing they have in common is art and a love of the internet.
