The Basics

Name: Aside from Yu-Huang (玉皇), which is his formal title, he also answers in Tokyo to Tatsuji Akira, the name he uses to front Suigyoku Ryuu (which is more commonly known as Jeido Doragon Entaapuraizu, because that Sounds Cooler). "Tatsu (竜)" is a reading for the kanji also used for "ryu," which refers not just to dragons but to imperial might; "ji (治)" implies 'reigning,' "Akira (翠)" can be read as "green" or "jade." This is the name and title found on the business cards he uses to introduce himself. His Chosen do not call him by name.

Age/Birthday/Whatnot: His birthday is the ninth day of the first Lunar month, which is nine days after Chinese New Year, which is different every freaking year. At least Li-Nian, being Chinese, will know and thus can tell everyone when his birthday is so they don't piss him off by forgetting presents.

He could be considered either a very old twenty-five or a very young fifty, and is incomparably attractive with Hitlerian charisma. He has never pretended that he is not a god; the way he carries himself, even when he appears as Tatsuji-san, is composed of Presence and Gravitas.

Interpersonal Dealings

The first thing to remember when thinking about dealing with Yu-Huang is that he is a god. Seriously. He is a god, and he KNOWS that he is a god, so you'd damned well better treat him with respect. He has a very deep sense of honor, and like most figures of Chinese mythology his word is his bond. If you can get him to swear to something, he will fulfill the promise unless you do something to renege on your end of the bargain. Because of this, he has absolutely no patience for disloyal people. Betrayal is not a death sentence, it is a sentence for The Pain (anguish, freakish misery, et al).

He is, like his Chosen, not entirely there. His corruption expounds on the administrative way he began his existence: he is completely OCD. He is an anal-retentive nightmare freak of nature, and this reflects in his completely obsessive planning tendencies. If there are papers on a desk, they must be neatly stacked, and exactly parallel with the edges of the surface and completely equidistant from all other objects. When he calls a meeting, you must be there on time. Not early, not late, exactly. on. time. He is incapable of multitasking: when he sets out a certain task (which is Type-A planned from inception to completion), it must be completed before others can be begun.

Hopefully you are understanding why he needed minions.

His greatest strength lies in knowing how to read people, and knowing what buttons to push and when. This is tied to his OCD; he might not magically know the answers, but he knows how to research, delegate, and impeccably store information. He's a very difficult man (god, being, whichever) to surprise because of this.

General Background

The Jade Emperor is one of the most important deities of folk religion and religious Taoism. He personally determines all that happens in Heaven and on Earth, and for this purpose he has an enormous celestial administration at his disposal, which is a faithful replica of the administration of the Chinese empire. At the beginning of each new year, his subordinates ascend to his palace in Heaven, Ling Xiao Bao Dian, and report to him. Depending on how well they've done, he may promote them or transfer them to other departments. His earthly representatives hold ministries that are responsible for various natural phenomena.

According to legend, Yu-Huang was the son of a king, and before he was born, his mother had a dream in which Lao-jun handed her a child. Upon his father's death, Yu-Huang ascended to the throne but abdicated his office after only a few days. He withdrew into the mountains where he studied the Tao, and when he attained perfection he devoted the remainder of his life to instructing people in the Tao.

Yu-Huang's actions were noticed by Yuan-shi tian-zong, the Celestial Venerable of the Primordial Beginning, and after 3,200 world periods he became a golden immortal, and then after a further hundred million aeons, the Jade Emperor. Around this time, Yuan-shi tian-zong retired in favor of Yu-Huang, thus making him the most important deity in the Taoist pantheon.

Unfortunately, being the most important deity in the Taoist pantheon means that you are, essentially, the CEO of Heaven. The entire Taoist pantheon is like a Board of Directors for the universe, and all the Celestial Venerable does is organize staff meetings to report to what is happening in the Middle Kingdom and the Below Realms. This position requires planning, paperwork, and delegation of authority.

Is it any wonder that he's OCD?

Like all heads of Big Business (Heaven is totally Big Business), Yu-Huang started to lose it. It doesn't take much to get frustrated with your underlings when you're putting in 24/7 on the job. It didn't take much for the whispers of Chaos (yes, even taoism has chaos) to convince him that spending the entirety of eternity in endless board meetings under the guise of Staff Unity was not necessarily the only way to be, particularly since no one ever appreciated the trouble he went through to make sure that all of humanity was perfectly planned. They KEPT GETTING SHIT WRONG.

Eventually, he couldn't take it anymore, and now is that time. He's been convinced that holding the True Starseeds will grant him the power to be Supreme Overlord of Heaven. No more meetings. No more thoughtless underlings who leave scraps of scraps of paper on the floor or don't empty the wastebasket. All is good.

About Suigyoku Ryuu

JDE is one of those monolithic mega-corporations that doesn't actually make anything or do anything when viewed by the public eye. The company has its fingers in many, many pies: political lobbying, media marketing, money laundering, investments, returns, the works. When new businesses come seeking venture capital, JDE is one of the places they go.

The business is legitimate, even if its past is not; in addition to the positions that his Chosen fill, there are hordes of regular salarymen doing actual business. Positions with JDE are highly sought-after because the pay is good and the benefits are remarkable. No one really knows how many subsidiary organizations they own, but there's at least one television station, perhaps two. They co-sponsor a professional baseball team, with their name on the stadium. That sort of thing.

The secret: JDE only exists because Yu-Huang could not cope with sitting around doing nothing. As much as he's come to loathe administration, he constantly needs to have his mind occupied by matters of business that he can count on and plan.

The high-rise that houses the JDE World Headquarters contains offices on the lower floors and then fully-furnished flats above. This is where his Chosen may live, if they so desire. The executive penthouse and boardroom on the top floor connects directly with Lin Xiao Bao Dian on the immaterial Plane of Heaven.

Godly Goodness

First, the good news: Since he is cloistered in Ling Xiao Bao Dian, Yu-Huang cannot directly affect the material plane. This is why you aren't all dead already. ^_^v He can only manifest his presence as that of a regular mortal, with the exception that he cannot be killed. At all. By anything. Sorry about that, but hey, it's Sailor Moon. You can't KILL the bad guys, you have to purify them or seal them or something.

Now, the bad news: Because he is cloistered in Ling Xiao Bao Dian, Yu-Huang can directly affect the immaterial plane. This primarily manifests itself in three ways:

  • Dreams and Nightmares : If he doesn't feel like appearing to a person physically, he can implant images in their subconscious, creating whatever dreams (or nightmares) he wishes. This is directly connected to Aura Sight below: he has to know who you are and where you are to affect your dreams. Luckily, they are only dreams. No Elm Streeting here.
  • Chaotic Touch : This is how he binds his Chosen. When a Starseed is given to him freely, he is able to imbue them with the power of Chaos, turning them black. This is an interesting point: he doesn't own the seed, Chaos does. But Chaos doesn't really technically OWN anything. Just something to keep in mind. The Elementals have given him their souls, but they can take it back whenever they want. This is why as long as he is still controlled by Chaos, there will always be Elementals: he can keep making more whenever anyone is gone.
  • Aura Sight : If you have a True Starseed, and it has awakened? He knows who you are. He can tell his Chosen who you are. He can find you any time you release your power. Santa Yu-Huang knows if you are sleeping and he knows if you're awake. NO PRESSURE OR NOTHING.

Also, he can be in as many places at once as he so desires. HIDE YOUR DIRTY UNDERWEAR.

Lucien
Lucien, quite frankly, is the easiest to manage (sorry, Lucien!). He wants to be special, to be powerful, to be important; to have a nigh-invulnerable god admit to a weakness that only you can counteract while letting you get away with whatever your twisted fuckup psyche desires is pretty much a one-way ticket to Good Times.

Li-Nian
It would be hard-pressed for anyone to deny the reverence in which Li-Nian holds her father figure, and she is far enough gone that most of the time she really does believe that he is the only father she's ever had; to say he encourages this behavior would be an understatement. Her loyalty is unshakable and unquestionable, and truth be told he's reasonably fond of her, too. As much as he can be, anyway.
